THE VOLUNTEER TOWN

Lamont, Iowa, located in Northeast Iowa, is a small town with a population of 503.  We are "The West Gateway to Backbone State Park" and also known as the Volunteer Town.

Currently, Lamont is comprised of one bank, post office, library, bar, ice cream/sandwich shop, convenience store, antique shop, insurance agency, newspaper, coffee shop, kids center, museum, car repair shop, car wash, fire department, hair dresser/barber shop, electrician, and two plumbers.

Since the closing of Lamont School, the children are bussed to Starmont Community School District which is a few miles north of town on Highway 187/Highway 3.

Lamont is very proud of opening of the Common Grounds Coffee shop.  This is a volunteer run gathering place where people can sit and chat with their fellow neighbors over coffee and donuts and lunch if they desire.  Another very important part of the town is the Kids Center.  This is also a volunteer run organization where the children can go afterschool on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons.  Both of the organizations have given back to the community both monetarily and service.
